Apollo 11 landing, 45th Anniversary.
I wasnt born yet, but since I am a space travel fanatic, I was wondering if any of you "experienced" folks have any recollections of the Apollo 11 launch, Moon landing, Earth landing?
My Mom just told me that she was at a campground on July 20, 1969 with some friends. The campground put a TV in this gathering area and most of the campers watched the landing. Mr Collins, President Bush, Mr Armstrong and Dr Aldrin pictured at the 35th anniversary in 2004.. And 5 years ago at the 40th Apollo 11 anniversary. Dr Aldrin, Mr Collins, Mr Armstrong and President Obama. Metal is being bent for the new rocket, Space Launch System that will be larger than the Saturn 5 rockets, will use 4 SPace Shuttle Main Engines(there are 16 flown SSME's aka RS-25D that will be used on SLS and then drop into the -so no longer reuseable. There are enough flown SSME's for 4 SLS launches, then a RS25E will be built, pretty much same engine, but about 1/2 the cost as it doesnt have to be reuseable, boosted by longer Solid Rocket boosters(than Shuttle boosters 5 segment vs 4 segment used on SHuttle). Test launch of the Orion capsule to be used atop manned SLS launches is being launched atop a Delta 4 rocket this December, then SLS-1 will be launched (unmanned) to circum-navigate the Moon in 2017. Congrats to NASA, the USA and all involved, such a great feat was accomplished 45 years ago on this day, 1969. A great article from my favourite spaceflight site. http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2014/...bright-future/ Excellent launch video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpgIaWbA-vs What do you remember about this period in time, 45 years ago?
