New Lift in--only one minor mishap
Well I got my new lift installed a couple of weeks ago and it seems to work fine. Got a Direct Lift Pro Park 8S. Not as fancy as some but for me a good combination of certified lift and price, and the perfect dimensions for my garage. Thanks Lee G or letting me see yours and get your counsel. I had it professionally installed, as I am getting a bit old for that stuff. I have almost 10' of ceiling height in my garage plus it is 21' wide x 21' deep with an 18' door. I raised the garage door tracks to within about 6" of the ceiling (which also shortened how far they protrude into the garage). Also installled a Jackshaft opener which is great.
My need was to have either my ZR-1 or BMW 535 up on the lift so I can park under it on a daily basis. It so far works fine. Plenty of room between posts--94", almost eight feet. But not too wide overall--103", leaving plenty of room for my wife's car in her normal spot. I have about 4-6 inches above either car when the other is up. If I had about one more inch of ceiling height I could get one more notch on the lift, but as is it is OK. I did move one light fixture and replace both with low profile flourescents. I also added a ceiling mounted electrical outlet just above the motor and the motor cord just reaches, so no extension cord on the ground. I currently have to back the BMW onto the lift due to interference with the door but I think with some work I will be able to get a few more inches out of the door and tracks and be able to drive in forward. The only minor mishap I have had was my fault. Last week with the BMW up I drove the ZR-1 in under the ramps but forgot to turn off the radio. Broke the antenna mast. Dumb. Have ordered a new one from MAD and will install this weekend, although my daughter is getting married Friday so it may delay the repair a bit. The lift is positioned close to the door to allow room at the front for refrigerator, tool cabinet and walking around. I had the motor mounted alongside the ramps instead of on the side so I have almost two feet on the side and front to get out of the car and walk around. Hopefully it will work well for a long time. --Bob
