Im not sure about vin an registration. If that works great.
I was under impression, they use tech 1 or tech 2 to interrogate vats and a few other things, then they have to figure out key or replace cylinder and key.
Regardless, my friend who works at dealer said it can get expensive quick to always have spare key on hand.

Maybe they can get keys cut from vin alone, if so great.

Verify key several times before discounting it. Vats can be problematic.
Once the security light is lit, you need to wait 4 full minutes before trying again. If you turn key again before 4 mins nothing will happen and the 4 mins will reset itself again. Also make sure that the clutch is fully against floor ( no drivers mat partially under pedal) or the car won't start either.

Have dealer verify pellet code then verify yourself or go radioshack and have them take reading as well to validate dealers info.

Sometimes pellets can be funny, very picky if wet as well.

A tech 1 would be useful, can you scan codes?

According to my Tech1 manual, you can check the VATS Pass Key A/D using the Body Systems cartridge. Under "Data List" it will read the key code and compare it to the code stored in memory and give the "Range" number. The problem is you have to have the key in the ignition and turned to "ON". I don't see where the Tech1 will read the stored code without the key in the ignition and turned on.

The owner's manual says that a dealer or certified locksmith can read the stored key code.

update , dealer can get the key code to cut the key but gm doesnt have the pellet info on any cars before 96 anymore. so i am going to load the car on a AAA wrecker and take it to the dealer to figure out . thankfully i have AAA premier so i get 1 200 mile tow for free . dealer said it will be 85 to get the correct code and get it working for me . i thought i had the correct pellet code from before when i had to get another key made when the original key failed . guess my memory is failing too . thanx to all for your input .
