Rear Knuckle Failure
On the way back to England from Germany yesterday my r/side rear knuckle failed causing suspension collapse.
we managed to limp the car home after packing out the bump stop. I'll get a photo tonight. I'm lucky it didn't fail on the Saturday when I did 4 laps of the full ring as the out come could have been much worse.

Now somewhere else I'll have to start looking for cracks..... Just had the front wheel bearing flange break off the spindle at the track, luckily with the shape of the spindle the wheel stayed on.

Re: Rear Knuckle Failure
Do you have a picture of the failure point of the knuckle?

Re: Rear Knuckle Failure
ok got out under the car after work. Here's a couple of pics
I cleaned up the inside of the other one and all looks ok but I will need to remove the wheel and have a good look on the outside yet. One thing to point out is that the car is on DRM coilovers and has been for the last 3 years. If you look at picture 'knuckle2' on the curved portion of the knuckle just under the lower anti-squat bar mount you will see the break is slightly dirty and looks old. This location lines up to a very slight 'dink/dent/chip' whatever word describes it best. Looks like something in the past may have weakened it. To get to Germany from England involves driving through Belgium - the only place I have found with worse roads than England!! The bumps through Belgium followed by 4 laps of the ring may have been enough to spread the weakness to breaking point.

How big was the pothole that you hit?

Re: Rear Knuckle Failure
There wasn't just one large pothole. The trip out there involved the usual bad potholed/patched Belgium highways. Then we did some driving in Germany (good roads) and the ring. It failed on our way out of Germany. There were a few sections of road repairs with small ramps taken at slow speed and maybe a couple of potholes. wasnt the case of hitting one massive hole and bang.

I'm saying in the past. I've had some hard impacts with my coilovers. Bent both rims on the passenger side. Shock mounts survived. |

Re: Rear Knuckle Failure
Glad you could limp home with no other problems.
