Default PLUG recommendations for 95 ZR1

I just picked up a 95 ZR1..with 28K on it. It has been garaged for over 2 years. I am in the process of changing ALL the fluids [including gasoline]. This car has a K&N filter and a POWER EFFECTS exhaust system. I have trying to decide what spark plugs to use. MY head "hurts" from reading all the available information over the last 8 hrs today. I will be driving the car during APRIL to OCT..nothing super hard ..just enjoying it. I was considering IRIDIUM plugs from NGK or DENSO.. but there seems to be a conflict on which part # to use ..depending on the web site. I have also considered the DUAL Platinum plug from NGK or DENSO. Again, however, there seems to be an inconsistent agreement on the correct part #.

I really have not considered AC DELCO, but would take a look at them.

Can someone give me the correct part #'s for all the DENSO and NGK plugs that will work properly in a 95 ZR1 with DUNN heads both sides. I would also like some suggestions on "gap" as this seems to also change from website to website.

All I want is the longivity of the IRIDIUM or DUAL PLATINUM plugs..as this ZR1 will be lucky to have 40K on it by 2014. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Jeff didn't elaborate much, Doc...He must have had a date . NGK 7164 is the stock number & the 'Proper' way to order. TR55IX is the more commonly talked about 'List' number. This 'list' number is how the plug is broken down, each didget has a meaning, where the stock number is just a stock number. Same plug, just different ways to order it.

Ryan and Jeff.. Thanks for the reply.. Well, that is 2 for 2 for the #7164 NGK. I had been sort of leaning toward that one as I have used NGK for years in my turbocharged snow machines.

Any thoughts on the gap? I think the #7164 comes at 0.044" ... I have read 0.050" is best and then that you should stay with 0.040". Any "gapping thoughts" would be welcomed.

Doc,

I use the NGK in my Z (1994) and I think I know of 10 others using them as well... No worries with adding them.


Changing the subject....

What color is your Z?? Interior? Mod's?

What other Z did you have and what opinions do you have from it?

David.. Thanks for the input on the NGK #7164..That is what I am going to use. My "new" ZR! is BLK/BLK...28K miles...#368 with Dunn heads and has POWER EFFECTS exhaust and K&N open filter. These "mods" were already on the car.. I plan to install a Haibeck BMCBG VER #4 chip. I have no other plans for any mods... with the possible exception of changing the POWER EFFECTS exhaust. I have only driven the car about 10 miles..we trailered it home from lower MI..because I wanted to replace all the fluids. I like the ability to change the sound of the exhaust with the KNOB on the POWER EFFECTS system, but I am not sure I will like the resonanace on a long trip down the freeway. I am considering the BORLA or the CORSA if I were to change. Any thought on either one of these?

The previous ZR1 was a 91 BLK /BLK that I purchased in 94 with 5K miles when I lived in Ohio. It was bone stock and I loved it. Sold it to buy a retirement home up here in he UPPER PENINSULA of MI. Retired in 97 and moved up here from Ohio. I have not got enough miles on the 95 to make a fair comparison, but I am sure it has a lot of areas of improvement.

Doc, I gap my plugs at around .037". People generally want to read way, way too much into plug gap. You want & need gap, but no too much...in a nutshell. But I'm just a dumb engine builder so what do I know .

Does any anyone know if plug indexing is worth the effort on the LT5? I think it would be a bit of a challenge to determine where the gap is pointing with them being so recessed under the cam cover. I think the tip could be marked but it would be a lot of effort to check on the direction of the gap. A flash light would definitely be needed

From what I've read...on a traditional engine...the gap is suppose to point between the intake and exhaust valves...but slightly more toward the exhaust valve. Indexing is supposed to be good for a few HP on some engines and on others there is no noticeable effect

Where would the gap point on the LT5...the primary, the secondary, in between, more toward the primary or more toward the secondary?

The UP is beautiful! The farthest I've been into the UP is Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Don't you have snow into June up there?

We have had snow flurries on the 4th of July ..twice since i have been coming up here. 300+ inches last year.. Need snow tires for a ZR1....Doc
