Default Re: How many spare LT-5's were built?

Thought I read somewhere that 'The General' had contracted with Mercury Marine for a run of 10,000 engines. I'll have to look around again to see if I can verify that number. Carrying roughly a third of the total car production as spares seems a bit large to me.

I think the 10,000# was at the end of the ZR1 run, and mercury marine offered a deal if gm would buy 10,000 a year they would only cost $4500 each

I'm curious as to what the 'Number' of extra/warranty engines built really is .

I think there were around 80 engines built as service replacements

not too many of them were needed. but they are cleared out of the gm inventory long ago

very few lt5s failed and required replacement

not really sure, but I remember hearing that, very well could be wrong (as most times I am)

graham and others would likely know.

the amazing thing is how FEW were needed. the lt5s from the factory very seldom fail. I do have a crank out of one that spun a bearing, and a few factory oil pump o rings let go

most of the failures were from tuners that struggled to get them right

the factory builds were quite good

Exact numbers were discussed @ the Breakfast @ Bowling Green(Gathering) with Dave M and Graham B, but I can't remember what they said...

I'm pretty sure Dwight taped it and maybe he can tell us what was said.

cheers

David
