transmission rear dust boot with R/R transmission

In the solutions (picture below), it is referred to as the transmission rear dust boot, as I take it must be installed last. I admit I don't exactly understand what this is telling me to do in what order. What does this have to do with the c-beam install? I will be removing the rear housing..what am I missing here? Thanks..

Not quite sure what your question is.


The dust boot can't realistically be removed without pulling the transmission..

Beam plate installation is easily done without removing anything except the C-Beam bolts.

What "housing" are you trying to remove?

Well, your confusion is my confusion. This is in the C-Beam solutions thread about C-Beam removal. I have the C-Beam out, I am likely going to pull the transmission after a test run with new motor mounts and C-Beam plates, my question is really what am I looking at in this photo, why would it say the seal got installed too early? If I do pull my transmission I take it this seal is in the rear transmission extension housing...or is this seal something else? It just has me confused as I like to have the order of things in my mind before I do them, if I need this seal, when would I install (with trans in or out). Thanks

The FSM says nothing about this in the R/R trans section. Also this does not look like the press in rear oil seal.

That's my point, why is it being removed in the demo thread? I didn't think I needed to remove it, should I buy new seals and do it with the trans out and if so, when would be the point to install them...the picture doesn't look like the rear trans oil seal, as I understand the real oil seal is a press in seal. But if I do sent my original trans to Bill I have another on to use for the time being that would require tail shaft swap.

I've changed several rear transmission seals and never removed the rear housing.

After re-reading the caption on the photo you supplied I think I understand. Who ever posted that installed a rear seal that for some reason had a dust boot on it. Our application of the ZF6 does not utilize a dust boot attached to the seal. He was saying it interfered with the yoke (no surprise) and had to be cut back. When you were referring to a dust boot I think most of us thought you were talking about the shifter mechanism rubber dust boot. The ZF6 trans has many applications and started life as a truck transmission. Looks like he ordered the wrong seal. As you point out the seal is a simple friction fit. No need to remove the rear housing for any part of this operation including the replacement of the seal.
