Default Oil Dipstick

Hey Guy’s,

Where do you put the bend on the dipstick to keep it from pushing upwards.

Thanks

I am not so sure bending the dipstick would help. How far does it pop up? Mine, after daily driving, typically is about 1/4" above the top of the tube. This, of course, is due to crank case pressure.

It rises about 1/2” above the tube. Is this normal?

It's really more about proper venting of the engine due to crank case pressure at high rpm. I was getting constant dipstick "push up" after getting the car back from Pete with the 391 with stage 2 cams (shift light set at 7300rpm). Steve @ Crossed Flags installed a Mighty Mouse catch can I had bought as well as fixing some cam cover vent tube/hoses as well as the PCV valve/hose. Since doing that, it's pretty well fixed the issue.

How many miles on the odometer? 1/2” is not truly abnormal depending on the mileage.
I would clean both PCV valves. Might help.

It has 40k miles on it and I just clean the pvc valves and used new hoses when I replaced the injectors

I wouldn’t worry about it. I had mine completely rebuilt with 4” iron liners about 20,000 miles ago, running a catch can and the dip stick pushes up about 1/4”.

I find that about 7 out of 10 stock engines have the dipstick popped up about 1/2". This is not good because the PCV system can pull road dust through the leak.

The dip stick is probably loose in the tube. Years ago the dipstick had some friction from the rubber seal in the cap. By now the seal is as hard as solid plastic. To add some friction bend the flat strip just under the cap by about 45 degrees. Test to see if the stick gets stuck when you try to lift it. If not bend it a little more.

So, bending the stick would help and keeping the dust out is a good idea.
Learn something new even after owning ZR-1s for almost 29 years!
Thanks Marc!

When we talk about oil dipstick. In some cases after years the T-Handle break. Does anybody know where a new dipstick can be purchased or is a aftermarket solution required?
