It appears GM may commit the ultimate travesty and name
Gdamn pushrod motor using the LT5 moniker.

Its a travesty really. If its not DOHC its not an LT5. The LT5 was something really different and special. This is not that. Thats like bringing the L88 name back and putting it in a base model vette lol.

Confirms what I’ve suspected all along. For many years first priority at GM has been pick-up truck engines that the other vehicle models have no other choice but to figure out how to make do with if more powerful engines were needed. Face it boys and girls we were very blessed to have our beloved DOHC LT5 Engine see the light of day in the C4 ZR-1.

Phil,

I’m still holding out hope that a 32VDOHC motor shows up in the “ZORA”.
I can buy that GM decided to continue on w a warmed over version of the LT4,
altho very disappointed in the use of the LT5 moniker.
Trashing the namesake of a motor that brought GM, albeit indirectly, world records that it did is a huge waste of marketing cred.
Maybe the powertrain guys want their own stamp on a completely different motor.
But I think they blew it with this. Call the damn thing an LT4+, LT4B.

Not enough camshafts to be worthy of the LT5 label

While I agree that ideally the LT5 moniker should be reserved for a more “special” engine. Every time I get in my 08 LS3 I am reminded of the easy power and torque these engines put out. I simply have a Vararam cold air intake and a canned tune, I make 400 rwhp. There is gobs of torque through the entire power band. That’s not even the current generation of engines.

I guess I’m saying that they really don’t need to do anything exotic to get large amounts of reliable power. Sure I would luv to see high reving twin cam, vvt, direct injected, twin charged etc. engine.

My biggest fear is that with the mid-engined, twincam 2019 or whatever Corvette, they price the car out of reach. Historically the appeal of Corvette is that of a relatively affordable everymans sports car that can run with more expensive cars. Lose that and Corvette is no longer special. Any of today’s manufacturers can build an expensive, powerful exotic sports car.

Even our ZR-1’s were, back in the day, a bargain for the power and performance you got relative to the competition.

Really though the c4 Zr1 was not an every man car being almost twice as expensive as a base Corvette.

I didn’t mean to imply that. It was however still a relative bargain compared to cars of comparable performance of the day.

There might be other ZR-1s, and we may witness the rebirth of the LT-5 (since GM is so fond of recycling engine codes), but there's only 1 King of The Hill!
