Also feeling the pressure to compete technologically, independent automotive glass producers, such as LOF of Toledo, Ohio, and PPG Industries Inc. of Pittsburgh, have invested tens of millions of dollars in new facilities and research and development for new automotive glass products. The hot product is "solar control" glass that keeps interiors cooler and protects them from the destructive effects of ultraviolet light by either reflecting or absorbing solar energy.

LOF's EZ-kool, which is chemically modified to absorb solar radiation, debuted last year on the Corvette and went into high volume in the '91 model year. All of General Motors Corp.'s C-body cars currently use EZ-kool. GM and other automakers will install the product on 22 other models by the 93 model year, says Neil Crateau, director of product marketing for LOF's modular products.

PPG has developed a transparent coating used on the giant windshield of GM's APV minivan - that is sandwiched inside the glass and can transmit visible light while reflecting its heat. The company also has developed Solextra 7010, a blue-tinted glass that absorbs heat energy. Adopted first in Europe, the product is being used in upscale Fiat SpA models, such as the Lancia Thema, and soon will be added to the Fiat Croma line, says H. Edward Littell, product manager of PPG's automotive and OEM glass operations.

The latest company on the scene with a new automotive glass product is Toledo, Ohio-based LOF. It recently introduced two new products: Ez-Kool solar-control glass and Koolof solar coated glass. LOF claims the former is the most significant advancement in automotive glass technology in 30 years.

The chemistry of Ez-kool glass is altered so that it reduces solar transmission by as much as 30%, and solar ultraviolet transmission by up to 45%. Koolof is a type of glass that uses a special metallic layer of material sandwiched inside the windshield that reflects invisible ultraviolet and infrared rays. It reflects solar energy 500% more than standard tinted glass used for windshields. The 1990 ZR-1 Chevrolet Corvette is the first production vehicle to be equipped with a Koolof windshield with Ez-kool side and rear glass.
