synthetic oil for LT 5
I understant Mark Haibeck recommends AMS oil synthetic for the LT 5. There are a number of types of AMS oil synthetics. Which is the best one for our LT 5 engines and is there another brand anyone else would recommend. Also, which oil filter is most effective holding oil?

Marc recommends the Amsoil 10-40 high zinc. He also recommends the AC Delco AC970C oil filter. I run both of these.

I use Mobil 1 High mileage 10-30. Mobil 1 High milege 10-30 has 1000 ppm of phosphorus and 1100 ppm of zinc.

Re: synthetic oil for LT 5
Amsoil had two 10-40 synthetics. one is 10-40 XL for 7.95. and the other is 10-40 premium for 10.10. The more expensive appears a little better on the test results posted. Also has a longer extended life service. Is the more expensive one necessary? Suggestions? My LT 5 is stock, 61,000 miles and runs perfect, right to 7000. Car is not raced. I just love the smooth, massive power and historic significance of the ZR-1.

I also use Mobil 1 High mileage 10-30, which Marc approves for the LT5 and is easy to find at WalMart.

High zinc levels are what is important. Old oils had higher zinc levels, the new oils don't. That's why most of us run some special oil.

Re: synthetic oil for LT 5
I used to use AMSOIL AMO 10W-40 as recommended by Marc, but just switched to AMSOIL ZROD 10W-30 after recommendation by AMSOIL and one of their reps. A case is on the way so I have not actually tried it yet. After seeing what Yun and others are using with Mobil 1 high mileage 10W-30 I may use that instead with it being so easy to get and no shipping to pay for. I just mailed off an oil sample (Blackstone Laboratories) to see how the AMSOIL AMO 10W-40 is doing after rebuild break in and what the phosphorus and zinc actually is.
As for oil filter, check out all of Marc's research and you can't go wrong: http://www.zr1specialist.com/HAT%20W...ers%202006.htm I bought a case of Fram TG3985 for about $2 each when Rockauto.com had their closeout so I guess I have a lifetime supply and I see Marc has updated recommendation since.

I use a 50/50 blend of Red Line racing and street oil. Both are high in the EP additives, but this is not a cheap option.
