Default helmets?

The 1/2 mile shootout requires a DOT approved helmet, purchased in the past ten years. I have one I've had for a little longer - paid over $100 @ the time, but what difference does it make when I bought it? Any full face shields that are favorites out there? Any to stay away from?

TIA,

P.

I need to get one also. SA2010. There are some inexpensive ones that are SA2010 aproved, like G Force. My issue is I want to try a couple on to verify size, fit, vision etc. and it is hard to find a place close by to do so. I have spotted one retailer in Barrington, Northstar Motorsports that sells helmets and one day soon I will head over there. Anyone aropund Chicago know of anything closer to Lake Bluff IL? Plenty of Harley delaerships around but they say motorcycle helmets rated SA2010 are not acceptable, although I don't know why. --Bob

Thanks so far all..

Yeah, Bob, same here. I have a rated motorcycle helmet, & I guess it doesn't qualify. I don't know how close they check, but I'd rather not be kept from racing for lack of a "brain bucket" that I should have anyway. There is a polaris joint nearby, and maybe they have some I can try on, at least to get the size right.

Motorcyclists use M-rated helmets - SA-rated ones are flame retardant which
apparently does not interest bikers. No reason why you can't ride your Harley with an SA helmet.

IIRC Snell ratings are much more stringent than DOT. Pretty sure a Snell M helmet meets DOT.

Helmets age out due to reliance on foam, which degrades with time.

Sounds like a blast - looking forward to your post on topic.

Best,
- Jeff

This is the Cheapest that I found. The Bandit is roughly 150.00 cheaper than everyone else.
