Tapping noise from engine.
hen i crank up my car there is a distinct tapping noise that sounds like a lifter ( trying to give a comparison for sound) it does increase with rpms but gets unnoticeable after about 1200 rpms. I need to run the engine a while and let it get up to operating temp to see if it remains. Any clues? Is this a "normal" sound for these engines? Its not real loud but you can hear it clearly at idle tat-tat-tat-tat-tat...

When mine starts making a ticking (upper eng) sound it's telling me "it's time" . I go beyond the "change oil" notice on the dash.

Re: Tapping noise from engine.
I had the same noise. Talked to a bud who builds race motors, he said to warm up motor to operating temp alowing it to idle. Noise should decrease as engine temp comes up. My noise went away. Cause/ oil bleading out of a lifter after extended non use of car, 6 months. Hope this helps!!!

When I first got mine I had to use an engine flush. It's basically a quart of diesel fuel that is run for 20min? Can't remember. Then you drain and fill with fresh oil.

If there is a next time..... check the oil pressure ! If the oil pump is beginning to fail and you see low pressure when the noise occurs, shut down and pull over. There have been stories of same.

Re: Tapping noise from engine.
My oil pressure is great, maybe a little too great. Since lingenfelter turned it into a 368 they said to use 15w-50 synthetic...I thought that seemed a little heavy, but I'm not going to argue with them. My oil pressure probably stays around 70. I watch it closely, need to get me one of those sweet little shift lights so I can keep an eye on my gauges a little better and not worry about my RPM's so much.

Re: Tapping noise from engine.
Yeah, one of the slickest ones I've seen is the little Raptor light. It is about the diameter of a ballpoint pen, and about 2-1/2" long.
By removing the vent grille (two screws) and drilling a hole in that flat area to the left side of the grille, the little light can be inserted there out of sight. But, believe me, you'll not have any trouble seeing it in broad daylight! Easy to set up and just a couple wraps of tape around the barrel wedges it in place to stay until you want to adjust it, which only requires it be pulled out an inch or so to access the "click" dials. In the picture you see it giving me the "Hello! I'm ready!" signal at power up. When you make a setting adjustment or change to same, it will first flash the 1000s rpm setting, pause, and then flash the 100s settings. 7 flashes, pause, one flash and I know it is now set for 7100 rpm (which seems to work out pretty well for me and my setup). P. P.
