Default Mercury LT5 ECM Dyno Test Unit

I snagged this a couple of days ago during my quest for an ECM. I don't really know exactly what it was used for, but thought the electronic experts here might enjoy seeing it and providing some info for the rest of us.

Looks like a bin switcher. It seems to show the different types of eproms being used like a 2732(4K), 27128(128K), 27256(256K).

Is it possible that it is hardware for the heads-up-display used during development? Someone recently posted a photo of (I believe) a prototype car with the HUD unit installed. The car was on display at a car show.

No HUD in 1990?

Looks like an ECM firmwre development platform of some sort. It seems to allow selection of diff EPROM sizes and diff programs - which are selcted via the dip switches - has the removable PROM sockets. I am guessing they built this before they knw final size they would require for the ECM PROM

There was a HUD unit PRIOR to 1990. It was coupled with an Instrumentation Module and was used during development and testing.
It wasn't what we know now as a HUD, but GM did refer to it as a "Heads Up Display.

Here are the photos that I was looking for. This photo shows the HUD mounted on the windshield:

And this one shows the Instrumentation Module. It sure looks exactly like what Jerry has.

Jerry,

You might want to reconsider modifying the ECM that was with that unit until you find out if the unit has any value to an enthusiast or collector.
