I'm i doing this right?
Hey guys,
I got around to put a new 160 degree thermostat in today. I also put in the new chip recalibrated from Marc. After everything is done and i top off the coolant fire up the engine. The temp gauge went to 260!!!. Then i turn it off let the car cool down , then fire it up again. The temp gauge once again went up to 260. Is there anything else i need to do? Did i miss a step? I just left it alone for now. Thanks in advanced. Shayne

Re: I'm i doing this right?
You probably have an air pocket in the cooling system. Supposedly, if the right side of the car is lifted up, while filling, the air pocket will be able to dissipate...

Check out this write up by Marc Haibeck, here is a link to the page at his site. It's the second to the bottom of the list of articles. It's a pfd download.

It jumps up that high fairly quickly? Or as it is warming up, it never stops? Sounds like the not-full thing, but since you did change the thermostat, I guess I'd want to make sure it was functional and installed correctly too.
Also, and no offense, but can you do something about your signature? It's pretty huge with those pictures in it.

Re: I'm i doing this right?
Today i fire the engine one more time it slowly creep up to 220 then finally the red low coolant light came on. I turned off the engine let cool fill up with water. Turn on engine again then the temp stay at 130 or 140.
Thank you everyone for the advice, really appreciated. Shayne |

Re: I'm i doing this right?
Shayne, when I am filling, I fill the car up as much as possible with out it running. I then start the car and immediately start adding fluid. It should constantly purge and be shooting out air bubbles into the upper reservoir. I did recently have a 90 car that was a bear, it never pegged the gauge or got close, it just was not purging the air. Squeezing the coolant tubes helps as well to flush an air bubble out.

Now there's one I've never heard before. I'll have to try squeezing the hoses next time I have to pull the plenum (Did I just say that?)

Re: I'm i doing this right?
Shayne next time try this. If you had just pulled the plenum just leave
the little hose disconnected at the plenum on the front driver's side. As you fill the air will escape there allowing you to fill better. When you see fluid topping out at the fill resevoir and not going down any more you're there.

Re: I'm i doing this right?
Well i have to admit that my heart was beating little bit faster, when i saw the temp gauge went up that fast. Thinking that i screwed it up..i quickly shuts off the engine. WOW..you guys sure know these cars and the tricks. Jeff that is a good trick never thought of it. Coolant flow to so many location in these motor. I gotta remember the little nipple on the plenum as well. Heck on my other car i just fill, close the cap and be on with it. But this an Lt5.
Thank you everyone heat is beating normal once again. Shayne |
