i haven't had the chance to do any further trouble shooting or the paper clip method that jeff suggested because i just got it back from the mechanic shop and drove it straight to the body shop for some touch up. while i was driving though, the display was flashing SYS where the instant MPG would be dislpayed and then it would test every possible digital bar on the display all at once. any ideas are appreciated. it would flash SYS like three times and then test the whole display is if power had been turned off momentarily and then i would get all the normal display readings back. 15 to 20 seconds later it would start the process over again. im kind of thinking that i am going to get to see what the dash looks like all torn apart. lol.

Flashing "SYS" is another problem. The CCM is detecting a problem with the chassis wiring. Could be a blown fuse or other simple problem, but you need to pull the error code before you can continue troubleshooting.

yeah i know i need to pull the code. i just haven't had the chance. the whole time i actually had the car, the display wouldn't work. then it started working on the drive to the body shop but it was flashing as i described. hopefully i will be able to get it sorted out when i get the car back.
