Clutch replacement (or can I get it rebuilt?)
My shop has determined that the pilot bearing is about to give up. They plan to install a replacement clutch. It doesn't have a dual mass flywheel so they expect the gearbox will be noisier. Hmmm!! I wonder how much noisier.

So you have a DMF now? If still in good shape, and lash is still within spec, you could simply reuse or resurface the flywheel and install a new clutch disc. With 85,000 though and original clutch, you?re probably close to end of life on the flywheel.
My 90 came with a single mass flywheel, and it was very noisy even with heavier weight trans fluid. It?s now very quiet with a DMF installed. I would search long and hard before reinstalling a single mass...but some cars I hear it isn?t that noticeable with. Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry

Be careful how you go about this or could end up with a noisy transmission and a clutch assembly that fails in short order because it wasn't designed for the high rpms of an LT5 engine. Most of these "replacements" are LT1 discs and pressure plates. The attached article by Mark Haibeck is a must read to educate yourself on the issues.

Dual mass flywheels are quite rugged. Unless that car has been abused or raced yours should still be good at 85k miles. They can be resurfaced. Www.ZFDoc.com is the authority. Contact Bill if you need it resurfaced or any trans related advice. If you do go with a single mass like a Fidanza have them install this shim kit (designed by ZFDoc) to minimize the gear rattle. When Marc did his 510 HP package on my '95 back in 2013, he recommended using the Fidanza lightweight aluminum flywheel to gain 15 HP over a dual mass. I had heard several cars with the lightweight flywheels and they rattled considerably at idle in neutral. Like marbles in a coffee can. Marc says some are quieter. I elected to keep the stock dual mass and despite my "510" package being only about 495, I was very happy to have the quieter dual mass flywheel. especially since it was and is my habit in a stick shift car to always pop my car into neutral at a light or when stuck in heavy traffic. --Bob

Since we're talking about the ZF6 and not the LT5, there's lots of competent shops in the area that would be capable of doing the transmission work on your car. If it were me, I'd find a local shop that specializes on hot rods and restorations. I would highly advise against even thinking of taking it to a Chevy Dealership or a flat rate shop of any kind.
