Default Car is running Fantastic

Brought the car out from storage and it has been running great.

I just got done doing the following:

- Updated/Wasinger Fuel Regulator
- New Spark Plugs 41-801 this time
- Replaced coils
- New Custom Ignition Module

Need to change oil and swap the fuel filter along with doing an alternator upgrade with associated wiring and I will be all set

Good to hear Jeff. I'm running strong also. Still getting use to the yellow. I am going to do a dyno run soon to see what this combo does.

I also got my orange taillights to swap into the euro taillights look.

Jeff,

What are u meaning about a “custom ignition module”? Have u modified the stock ICM? Inquiring minds want to know.
What ignition coils are u using?

Custom Ignition Module means no longer stock. Stock IM and coils are not being used. I have a unit I came across that was built for several other applications and the Developer was willing to add the 8+1 crank trigger code to it. It utilizes 8 LS coils, I have PN 12573190. I modified a set of wires for the LS coils.

The Stock harness is not cut, I ran a new wire to the crank sensor and just found a mate connector so will change to that and remove the added wiring.

I repinned one wire @ the ECM and ran it to the empty spot on the diagnostic connector. the new module then plugs into the diagnostic connector.

I truly think the car runs better overall, seems much smoother. the new module is not high power, it jut is a controller for the LS Coils so it takes a very low amount of current 300mA max I believe

the only downside is the unit needs to get installed in the cabin as the components are not all the higher temp ( Military spec), most or Industrial

WOW! That sounds like exactly the kind of solution our cars could use. I like the idea of using the LS type coils and having one coil per cylinder even if it runs “waste spark”. I would think it may have benefit in the higher rpm range in particular.

Nice work, Jeff. I applaud this effort. Does the tacho work? What about the serial RPM stream? All of that is produced, I think, by the factory module.

Yes Tacho works.. as normal, in fact, I know my tacho is off by about 200rpm. I can adjust it in the IM through the Cal file to get it set exactly (which I need to do)

I assume you mean RPM stream to the ECM? it wires to the ECM just like the Stock IM. The repinned ECM wire is the fault line, I now have it running to the diagnostic connector in the empty location and then that is the connector I run to the new IM. the Fault line was the only one missing from the DIAG Connector

I never could find the mate to the long flat IM Connector, I just found a mate to the Crank Sensor plug that went to the stock IM, so I can switch back to the stock wiring for the crank, by do that it makes it even more plug and play..

I did not cut the Fault line at the ECM, removed it and taped it back and ran a new wire.

This is the IM mounted, I orderd the mounting brackets and they sent blue instead of silver, but they still work to mount it..lol.

Earlier picture of testing below

Needed to confirm it worked before going through the effort of mounting everything. IM is the silver box on top of the ECM

Love it when a plan comes together. Thanks Jeff. A fascinating alternative, and actually a better one than the stock ICM.
