Getting ready to pull the engine on the 90’. Been reading up on the process and it seems fairly straight forward.
Question is this. The engine has OBX headers which are on the short side. Has anyone pulled/installed the engine with the headers left in place or do they have to come out too? With the OEM exhaust manifolds it’s obvious they have to come off. Just curious about the headers. H ![]() |

Do it all the time.
Be sure to pull the flywheel and remove the AC air box cover. Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry

1. The first two items to be removed before the engine can be lifted (with Headers Installed) are the Wiper Motor and AC Temperature Sensor (Passenger Side Fire Wall). The last items to be installed will be the Wiper Motor and AC Temperature Sensor. The LT5 was lifted with Headers, Injector Housing, Alternator, Pressure Plate, Belt Tensioner, and lower engine Radiator Hose installed.
You cannot use the standard lift eyes (shown in photo) if you want to install the LT5 with headers however (use soft slings around Flywheel and Harmonic Balancer). See Lifting the LT5 ![]() Post 88 - Installing Engine In ZR1

As you bring it up and forward you have to tilt the flywheel end down quite a bit so the headers will clear everything as the engine comes out. In Wazoo land we use a single point lifting bracket like you see here on Rich’s engine swop http://www.zr1.net/forum/attachment....4&d=1418668694

Just to clarify... on the wiper motor. Are we pulling just the cover or the entire motor?

A/C Temp Sensor........................Wiper Motor......... ![]() If you want to lift/install the engine with Headers......it helps to jack up the rear of the ZR-1 (tilt the ZR-1 down in front and up in rear). Whatever angle you can get the Front of the ZR-1 down means less tilting down to the rear of the engine during installation.

Phil or other WAZZO members,
I'm getting close to installing the rebuilt engine with headers into my '91. The single point lifting bar looks to be the way to go. I've blown up the picture and also searched the site for details on the lifting bar. Do you have any pictures of the plates mounted on the IHs and the connection to the lifting bar? Tony - Tnova |
