Default Replacing Gear Shift Knob

I'm stumped here guys. I removed my gear shift knob on my 94, in order to replace the leather boot. Took little to no effort coming off and I'm just reversing the steps in order to replace the knob but for the life of me I can't get it right. Gotta be missing a step but can't figure it out. No matter how far I rotate the knob on the shaft and insert the aluminum "T" piece, I can't get the shifter to go into reverse. I've tried it from as tight as I can rotate the knob down all the way to where it's barely hanging on and I still can't get the shifter to pull up far enough to shift into reverse. Missing out on some beautiful weather to do some driving so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Jim

Stock shifter or ..

Loosen set-screw in the lift ring and reposition on the rod? Maybe the lift ring has actually failed and the set screw isn't tightening to secure it. It wouldn't be uncommon for that to happen.

Yes it is the stock shifter. Thanks! I will try that. How exactly should the set screw be positioned on the rod? Maybe I just brain farted the way it came apart. The FSM really isn't much help.

Look closely at the rod inside the shifter shaft. The rod has a small flat spot, that’s where the set screw goes and grips the rod.

Great! Another little trick, if you screw down the shift knob too far, you prevent the reverse lock out from full stroke to enable shifting into reverse. Best to test it before you set the aluminum wedge.. I made this mistake changing out my reverse lock out and had to take the darned shift knob back off!

Good info, Thanks! I actually replaced my stock shifter knob with an aftermarket "ball type" that matches my Admiral Blue. It works fine now👍
