AC Reinstall
Anyone done a reinstall of AC system? Anything particular to watch for or do to ensure its leak free?

Re: AC Reinstall
Is this Freon R12?
Is a new AC compressor involved? To obtain R12 Freon you must be a certified AC person or sign that you will have an AC Certified Person recharge your AC System. Get a new dryer Clean orifice screen on high side Add Mineral oil maybe 8 to 12 oz (R12 Freon System) If new compressor use half bottle of oil in compressor and half bottle of oil in dryer It will appear new compressor is full of oil but that is just to keep it lubricated during initial checks Evacuate the AC system for 30 minutes and see if it holds vacuum (or take ZR1 down to AC certified mechanic and he will evacuate it for you and test for leaks) Do not open up AC system after evacuation Get paper clip to cross pressure switch (low side) so compressor will engage (engine running) Connect can of Freon to connector on dryer Hold Freon can upside down for a bit and then right side up You do not want to push too much Freon in at once and lock up compressor After a can or two the pressure switch bypass should not be needed (reconnect pressure switch to low side) Have AC turned on all the while with engine running Install last can of Freon and note AC running cold on lines under hood and inside car

Re: AC Reinstall
Are the lines pretty straight forward to seal or are they temperamental?

Re: AC Reinstall
'90 & '91 original should have o-ring seals fitting to the compressor and '92+ I believe will have a sealing washers fitting to the compressor. Aside from that the AC lines to components are pretty straight forward.
Did you remove the AC lines and compressor or were the lines and compressor in a box of parts? |

Re: AC Reinstall
A new or rebuilt compressor will have oil in it but that is not near enough and.....there is oil flowing throughout the system.

I say that because when you set compressor aside after plenum removal you can break the lines at the connectors to the dryer if you are not carefull In terms of tightening all AC fittings for a good seal...not temperamental.

Re: AC Reinstall
If the compressor is OE/GM it should have a production number that could be identified. '90 production should be 1090565, '91 should be 10158100 and those would use o-ring seals if the manifold hose was OE. '92+ compressor production numbers ??? If you have a label other than the first 2 post it.
