no start at times

Well i have been having a no start at times with my auto eq ZR-1. Last week at the track ( drag) first run ok next run the scoreboard fail and i had to wait for about 20 mins while they installed a new chip. Ok time to fire up guess what
no start. It was too loud to hear anything so i was pushed back. After a
couple more tries it fired up. So i just went home to play it safe.
Sunday removed starter, Monday it went to a repair shop to be rebuilt. Got
the starter back about 4:30 p.m. Monday. Installed starter while i was in there
i tapped into the black with yellow tracer to gr from the starter enable relay
as posted in a post from Gorden K. Good right? Wrong it failed again while
i was at coastal corvettes the following Monday. I could only hear the starter
click but no turn over. So i used a wire from the Battery to the large purple
wire going to the starter, turned key on with car in park (auto ) it started
right up when i touched the Battery feed to the purple wire.
Well i went and replaced the starter enable relay as a precaution. As long
as i have the drivers side hush panel down i would run a wire from a no/mon
toggle switch next to my B&M shiftier to a relay that would feed 12v to the
starter went i operate the toggle switch. So now if car won't start i can
leave the key in the on position and start the car with the toggle switch.
I have removed the clutch relay and ran the wires (yellow and purple) to
safety switch on the auto shiftier so car will only start when it is park or
neutral position.
I'am going racing this Fri. night to test & tune and to see if just replacing
the starter enable relay has helped.

Went to the track Fri. night (drag) to see if my no start is fixed. and the ans is
no. Arrived at track about 10 min before it opened, shut car off and waited.
Track opens and car started right up so far so good, Made it the staging lane
no tbl. Time to suit up and belt in. No start again , but wait i just used my
backup starter switch and fired right up. Made 4 runs that night .033 r/t
7.72 @ 92.3 mph 2nd run start ok .050 r/t 7.70 @ 94,4 mph. 3dr run no start
used my backup switch start ok i pushed the tree and went red .090 r/t
7.75 @ 94.4 mph. Last run no start used backup switch .057 r/t went 7.73
@ 94.2 mph. Went back to the pit and prep car to go home (removed
numbers, removable side bar driver side, air tires and closed the exhaust).
Again no start used back up starter switch fired right up.
Sat opened drivers side hush panel and took the new starter enable relay
out. Took old relay and wired it across the switch ( see FSM 8A pg 30-1
starter and charging system). Also ran a ground wire to the black with yellow trace on the relay mounting. Then i disconnected the wires from the auto
shiftier and connect them together and yes there is a warning label
"warning ! do not start car unless shiftier is in park!.
This morning Sunday i went for my test drive ,drove about 60 miles stopped
and had some coffee. After about 25 min car started right up. Drove back
stopped for gas , car started right up , got back home stopped car. Restart
worked fine, i don't know if the at times trouble is gone but its a good start.

On my last post i said i heard the starter click but start. it should have been
i heard the solenoid click but started did not engage.

Sure good you didn't have to pull the starter again.
I'd like to see schematically what you did on page
8A pg 30-1. Sounds like a great "emergency" switch to have
right along side my emergency secondary fuel pump switch.

go to post #19. he shows a relay to operate the starter.
What i did 1.find the purple wire in the large loom just behind the ECM.
it would be a 10 Ga. purple wire (the only one in their ). in the FSM you see
that c100 connection that is the bulkhead connector going into the car. I
tapped into the wire just behind the ECM.
2. tap into the purple wire (i did not cut mine) run that wire to a relay mounted
just above the battery (swing contact) other end to a inline fuse then to the
battery. connect your normally open moment switch ( I used a flip up covered
toggle switch) this switch would send 12v directly to the starter solenoid and
operate the starter. You could mount the switch near the relay or install it
were you could get to it fairly easy in side your car.

now for the starter enable relay. look at the starter enable relay. pull the relay out and open the cover, then solder a wire across the relay contacts.
replace cover install relay. (this makes the relay always closed).
Someone posted that you should run a wire from ground to the black with
yellow trace on #2 of the starter enable relay. that wire goes to the
Central control module ( CCM ).

I have had many starter issues as well. I now have a push button switch mounted on the hush panel right by my left knee. The starter works every time with that switch. I think my real problem is in the key switch. I don't know when I want to tear into the steering column to fix it. The work around is to easy for me right now.

thanks very much I will look at all this when I get home. I can't at the moment picture this in my head I have to see it on the schematic. it's probably just a matter of time before I have some incident like this but so far in the 17 years I've had the car I've only had one instance of no starch and that was because I washed the motor. it was a dumb newbie mistake that I made after having had the car for one day. One thing that I have always done on startup is to fully depress the clutch before turning the key. This ensures that the contacts on the clutch switch are fully engaged before current is passed through them. the only other time that I had a no start was when the battery was needing replacement.
