Spare tire and carrier
I just recently was detailing my car and decided to remove the spare tire and the carrier completely from the car. How much does it weigh and how many of you in the forum have done this to get rid of excess weight? My exhaust sounds better too and I felt the difference the moment I drive it around my neighborhood. Taking that weight directly from the rear of the car helps. I dont care if I blow off the tires thats always nice anyways. I will never use it so why carry it around. In all my years of owning vettes I have never had a incident where I needed a spare tire.
I have a 24 hour road service contract so where ever I am they will come and pick it up on a flat bed. If it tears up the wheel then I will buy another one. I wonder how many of you have done this?? Ed Ramos #3028 |

This link breaks it all down. I removed mine for the same reasons as you. However, I'm pretty sure that it's also there for protection from a rear collision.

Re: Spare tire and carrier
Exactly right, the spare offers that bit of compression resistance in the case of a rear end collision. If the gas tank gets involved because the spare is gone it would not be a good day.
My spare is at about 18psi and I don't care. It's there for the protection not as a true spare. I too have a great roadside insurance policy and have used it twice on this car in 17yrs. I do know of a few cars with the spare removed. One car comes to mind that not only has the spare been removed but the battery relocated to the rear to help out in weight distribution.

Good point. I happen to check my spare and it was pretty much flat. So not really of any value aside from the rear collision protection. With my Z06 wheels, I need to find another solution for flats, altho really never had to fix a flat on the road thank goodness.

Re: Spare tire and carrier
Bob,
I think you have a spare that you load in the hatch if I am correct. With the 18/19s plus the Z06 calipers clearance with the stock spare is problematic. However, since I now have the rear Z06 calipers on the car I may try the spare today just to see. If the spare does fit the rear, it may be possible to retain it. If a front flat happened, I could swap the rear 19 to the front using the spare for the rear. Clearly an awkward setup at best but allowing me to limp to some location with better facilities for repair.

Swap rear wheel with spare first. Then change out flat on front with rear wheel. Will that front fender clearance be adequate for steering with rear wheel installed on front? |

Re: Spare tire and carrier
I've taken mine off simply for detailing the rear area. Will more than likely just carry a spare in the rear hatch for long trips. Wasn't Robert looking at having the spare tire delete bracket reproduced somewhere? This is what I'd like to do as far as rear impact protection.
