Is this normal?
Hi all,
I've been reading these forums and other sites about the ZR-1. I've finally registered because I'm really considering purchasing this 1991 ZR-1 that I've come across and was hoping you could give me some advice on this purchase. It looks and drives real nice! It pushes me into my seat even only at 4k RPM! All 16 injectors had been replaced. I did notice, however, that right at the end of starting up the engine, there's a sound of a chain for like a second. Same thing when turning off the engine. Is this normal or something to be concerned about? I had driven a different 1991 ZR-1 and don't recall hearing this sound. The only other issue I'm aware of that may be of concern is that the ABS light is on. Thanks in advance for your feedback. |

Re: Is this normal?
Most Z's have a rattle at start up till oil pressure, No worries.
At shut down it's flywheel, all stock Z's have dual mass flywheels most will have a bit of a rattle at shut down or springs in flywheel could be getting a little weak they are over 20 years old, again no biggie, when you do a clutch change deal with it then. For the ABS you might be able to go to Auto Zone ask them to scan it to find out if it's a sensor the rear sensors are easy to change by just taking the wheel off, fronts are build into the bearing if it's a sensor cheap fix. Heck even if the ABS unit is bad, it won't be that hard to find a good used unit cheap. Pete

Re: Is this normal?
The rattle sound's worse than it really is.
A little reading for your rattle on start up. http://www.zr1specialist.com/HAT%20W...ers%202006.htm

Re: Is this normal?
Normal and most do that.
What Jerry said on the ABS sometime just not enough brake fluid in the master cylinder will cause an ABS light as well.

Re: Is this normal?
I'd really like to thank everyone for your responses! I really appreciate it! I haven't worked on cars before so have been apprehensive, but thought this was a great opportunity to start, especially since the seller had already put some work into getting this car in shape from being stored in a warehouse. Knowing there's so much knowledge out there and folks willing to help have really made me feel more at ease.
BTW, I just remembered there's something on the car that seems likely only aesthetic. The glass top was on and on the inside back metal frame of the top, there seem to be one strip of clear glue-like residue on the driver's side and residue with a flat broken yellow plastic piece on the passenger's side. Does anyone what this is supposed to be and whether it can be repaired or cleaned up? Thanks! |
