S1: Why & How

Frank Ellis - then a young Chevy marketing manager, now a retired GM executive, is an unsung Corvette Challenge Hero. He held together the patchwork of engineers, dealers, sponsors and racers that kept the series going in ’88 and ’89. But there wouldn’t have been a Corvette Challenge had not Doug Robinson orchestrated the rout of the SCCA’s Escort Endurance series in ’85, ’86 and ’87 that got the Corvettes kicked out.
Frank, Doug and retired Corvette Chief Engineer Dave McLellan and others will tell all.
Located in the Chevrolet Theater

11:00am – 12:00pm
Open Discussion on Corvette Challenge Series

Located in Chevrolet Theater

1:00pm – 2:30pm S2: Guts, Guile and Glory

This is a show-and-tell. It starts in the Chevrolet Theater and adjourns to the NCM garage, where Challenge cars will be described, inspected, and dissected.
Bill Cooper won the 1989 Challenge championship in Doug Rippie’s car. Hear them and others, including Chevrolet engineer Jim Minneker, discuss the racing and the machinery. How were ’88 cars different from ’89? What role did CAMS play? What rules did the racers not break?

2:30pm – 3:00pm Open Discussion on the win
3:15pm 4:15pm S4: Hoodwinks, Hanky-Panky and History

Hear first-hand about how Chevy dealers both affected (and were infected) by the series and about how collectors have been treated since then by a unique batch of VIN specific production C4 racers.
Listen to Wilkes-Barre’s Ken Wallace explain how he found himself the owner of so many ‘88s. Be awed by Curt Smith’s incredible spread sheets as he has documented and tracked Challenge Cars. Be thankful for Frank Ellis’ creativity and courage and the far-sightedness of collectors like Mike Yager and Chip Miller.
