Some thoughts on Chip Burning - ZR-1 Net Registry Forums

Several have asked me if I could provide some chip burning assistance to them and as a registry member I am happy to help out. I do want to post some stipulations.

1. I'll be glad to help out if you want me to burn a chip or guide you through that process if you would like to learn.

2. Although I have some copies of other tuners calibrations, I won't make copies of those for others. If you already have a chip from a tuner and you'd like a copy or something changed, I can do that. But I won't reproduce an MH, DRM, or other tuner chip if you don't already have a copy yourself. Not looking to infringe on anyone's livelihood, I do this for fun but its not my "business". Guys like Marc are pretty neat people and he's very helpful and I wouldn't want to damage any of that relationship.

3. My overall feelings on chip burning is that each motor/drivetrain is unique and you really need to scan the vehicle and produce customized calibrations given the driver, motor, surroundings etc. Otherwise, you really can't optimize and maximize the performance.

4. Its my belief, after modifying calibrations for the last 9 years, that its best to make calibration changes rather than let the ECM "adapt". In other words, the closer the calibration can be to optimal and the smaller the magnitude of the adaptation the ECM needs to make, the better the motor will run. ECM isn't the silver bullet. The software allows for only so much change and then it gets counterproductive. Starting out with a "close to optimal tune" is a good foundation.

5. And a WARNING! Tuning can be addictive. Its like "rapture of the deep"
