lug nut covers falling off...
Anyone else have this problem? It's all on the right side. I lost two off the back wheel this week, and one off the front about a month ago. What the heck?
I hand-tighten them now because I noticed my socket would chip the paint a bit. I guess I need to go back to using it though, because these things are fairly pricey for what they are, and I can't be replacing them every few months...

Re: lug nut covers falling off...
I've always just recommended a drop of silicone sealant on the threads and if you need them removed you'll have "no trouble"!
Yours I believe have become "souvenirs" for the "Hobbits" that frequent Catoctin Cr in Leesburg!! I've got a few that will get you back to "complete" and a couple "spares"! |

Could somebody be steeling them? What I do is I line a socket with a paper towel and tighten them hand tight.

Re: lug nut covers falling off...
Hello from Switzerland,
I always tighten them hand tight with a socket. Once they are over tighten you can forget them. Be careful. I have the similar ones on the Pickups and the Blazers. Daily use! Never lost one. I think they were stolen.

Re: lug nut covers falling off...
I still have a few extras to cover the ones that fell off. Thanks for the offers, though. I guess I'll try the paper towel trick. Finger tight isn't doing it, apparently.
I'd guess maybe the right side come off due to the direction the wheels rotate. All the others on that side were a little loose as well. I don't think it's someone messing with me, though I guess you never know. Dave, I'd thought about silicone, but it seems like I pull the wheels off somewhat often. Removing the little dab 20 times, and then reapplying a dab 20 times seems like a bit of a hassle. I'll keep it in mind, though.

Re: lug nut covers falling off...
Bob,
You have to consider I had customers that usually needed multiples from tire changes or services from independent shops or thefts. When you need 5 or 10 every 60 or so days they get irritated and that "fix" usually made them real happy. The bead of silicone was also a good retention "fix" for the larger center caps of the 2nd gen f-body cars. The "lil dab will do you" but it needs to be silicone of sorts NOT BRYLLCREAM !!! |
