Default Help! Injector Question

I'm elbow deep into my injector replacement project. Plenum is off and everything went well with that. Two questions:

1) While loosining the screw for the ignition module, the 1/4 inch socket popped off and fell somewhere. Haven't been able to locate it with a magnet. Can this thing get anywhere that will cause damage if not located?

2) I've removed the four 10mm bolts that hold the fuel rails on. Does the whole thing just pull off, or do I need to remove something else. Everything still seems tight, so I don't want to pull on something if I need to remove something else first.

Pat:

1. If it dropped into the middle of the engine, no harm no foul. It's probably lying next to the starter and it's big enough not to block the weep hole under the starter. Personally, I'd take the time to remove the coils and fish it out. If for nothing else, for peace of mind.

2. The only thing hold them on is the friction from the "O" rings on the injectors. If they're in really tight, you might try prying on the bottom of the rail gently.

3. Remove the gas cap. Pressure in the fuel tank will cause the fuel rails to weep gas if your garage warms up.

Thanks Tom. The socket definitely ended up somewhere under the coil packs. I may go ahead and take them out after I get the injectors replaced, as you say, for peace of mind.

The injectors and fuel rail are a pain to get off. You'll probably want to pry it with something soft, I think I used the wood handle of a hammer. Jeff has posted before a picture of using The Club. That thing looked like it was made to pull fuel rails!

Yep ... they were a pain alright. But fortunately, it all came apart. Now I'm at a waiting point because I decided I should go ahead and replace the large O-Rings on the primaries. I didn't realize until I took the injectors out that the large o-ring was not part of the Accel injectors. I think Marc H. told me about this one time, but I didn't remember. The originals don't look bad, but they 18 years old, so why take chances.

I'm also replacing the plugs and wires. Can't wait to tackle #8.

Sounds like a better plan than paying the unobtanium GM prices. If the stuff was that cheap when I did mine, I'd have replaced the fuel line o-rings while I was at it. Like you said, it's all apart, why take the chance, especially if the replacement parts are cheap!

It's maybe a 20 minute job to get the coil packs and starter out after you've popped the plenum. You can clean out the drain hole and make certain everything is chipper with the starter while you're there. You've got hours invested in this project already. Twenty minutes isn't going to hurt a thing!

As an aside, you're also to the point that things become a "well, while I'm here I might as well..."

Now's the time to change the wires, PCV valves, any vac problems that you have, possibly replace the coils, and change the serpentine belt!

Replace the wires and the coil packs. Its a no brainer while you are there cleaning out the gook from the weep hole galley as well. Coil packs (AC Delco) Replacements are about $155 for all four on Ebay and the Delco Replacement wires (628Ds) are about $50.
