Default Transmission Fluid?

While I have my car in the air, I thought it might be good to change the transmission fluid. What fluid should I use?

I already did an oil change.
Replaced the left O2 sensor.(still working on the right)
Cleaned in the wheel wells.

What else do you all recomend?

What typ of coolant does everyone use? I don't want to get the wrong stuff.

It seems all I do is ask questions.

Standard recs are Castrol TWS 10W60 for the tranny fluid. Purchase 3L from your local BWM dealership. You'll use 2.2 or so. Loosen the fill plug before the drain plug. It requires a 17mm Hex.

I would also change the differential fluid if it hasn't been done recently.

Get the regular green stuff for the coolent. No DexCool.

Is there a specific fluid for the differential? Is there anywhere else I can get the tws 10w60 besides a BMW dealer?

roger, on the engine coolant ,PLEASE make sure it has gm 1825 on the label . using the wrong stuff will blow head gaskets. Napa has the correct stuff . on the rear end I use royal purple 75-90 and add 4 oz of limited slip . hope this helps

I am looking in the manual, but can't find how much of the royal purple I will need for the rear?

You don't HAVE to have RP. A bunch of folks, I dare say most, run Mobil1 that you can pick up from the local parts store. It's the standard weight gear lube 75/90. You'll need 2 containers and will use most of two with some slop left over. Be certain to pick up 2 bottles of differential additive from the GM dealer. I don't have the part number though. They'll know what it is.

The rear fill plug is a 10mm hex BTW.

Isn't it an engine oil? I mean, does the gearbox use the same oil as certain engines?

Pete, these aren't stupid questions. I got my Z back in August and have had nothing but questions for the guys on the Netregistry. They have all been very helpful and considerate of us NOOBs. I ask questions and search the site for answers all the time. Congratulations on your car.

Yep you're right Roger but you know, it's better to be safe than sorry, especially when you're new in a message board.
