Catalytic Converter Cylinder Damage
I ran across a thread a while back that discussed this. The issue was cylinder damage due to catalytic converter dust being making its way back up into the cylinders and causing premature damage to cylinder walls and rings. The solution tossed about was to remove the headers and core out the converter material or install headers and aftermarket cats. This is not a simple task to say the least. I wanted to float this out to the group to get a better feel regarding this issue. I have a 92 with 22,000 miles on it and am wondering if I really need to add this to my list of future must do projects. Of all the little hidden gremlins that we must worry about being ZR1 owners, this one really snuck up on me and left me feeling like REALLY?

Re: Catalytic Converter Cylinder Damage
I believe the risk is remote but still a possibility. Not something I would lose sleep over.
Catalytic dust reversion is most likely to occur from high rpm de-celleration driving. In 1993, the catalytic converter placement was revised for 2 reasons I can think of, (1) simplification of exhaust manifold fabrication and (2) moving the converters further back in the exhaust system.

Re: Catalytic Converter Cylinder Damage
Thanks guys... with as much I drive that car, can wear out the cylinders if they are not moving..... I would like to drive it more. Just waxed her up last week and she really catches the eye of everyone on the street.
