Default What was I Thinking

I've been sitting around lately, doing nothing, and decided it's time to sand and buff my 95 ZR-1. What was I thinking?

I've tackled this once before but it was long enough ago that I forgot just how much work it is. My other car had been repainted so I knew it had extra clear coat on it.

This is Factory Original Black, of all colors, with clear.

I've been told the factory used minimal clear coat. This makes sanding somewhat tedious to say the least.

I'm using 2500 grit paper with a flat rubber sanding block and blue foam pad.
So far I have about 40 hours work in it and both doors, rear fenders and the back bumper have been completed.

This is me taking a picture of the passenger door with my reflection leaning against my other car.

I'll show pictures of the finished product if the Good Lord lets me live long enough to finish.

Black is so much fun !!! as well as so rewarding ...

Just finished washing the black Z and the outside temp is approaching 95 now (wait, both of my Z's are black as well as my S-10 daily beater .... what was I thinking?)

Anyway, looking very good and you have my complete empathy

Yeah Steve beer is all that's required to get me going. I'll have to wait until my back straightens up before I come down and start yours.

I had the exact same urge Randy, but I sprung for having two expert detailers come to my heated garage in the winter and for $450 they spent 6 hours polishing the paint to get rid of 20 years of swirl marks-- they called it "paint correction" I now use a sealer/polish product (called "Car Topper") as a sealer -- their recommendation. Really makes it shine. The paint gets favorable comments at every show. And my back doesn't hurt. But my wallet does.--Bob

Yeah Mr. Bob, I marveled over your car at the gathering, took pictures also, I have a buddy that had a ZR-1 several years ago and is looking for another. I showed him yours and he's loving it. Maybe he will get his finances straighten out and give your a call. I've never heard of the sealer/polish product you are using but I can say it does a Excellent job.

Nice job...Lots of work....My 91 blk/ blk will see the detail shop soon.....Yes black is very rewarding when done correctly but requires special care in the upkeep if you want my opinion .....

Love those wheels-The Shelby series...I see they are hard to come by....

Good job...

Awesome Randy! You're an inspiration and I'll try to do this next Spring after I am finished with studies on the black 95 I have. If you don't mind, I'll hit you up then for the tips and tricks so I don't screw it up.
