I can see a 90 would not fit the 91 but why won't a 91 fit the 90? only difference is a bigger opening on the 91 by looking at them

Because the the air bag and the airbag connector for the MY90 is a one year only. Same as the Derm.

I suspose it could work if your replaced the DERM which would be a hell of a lot of work and MAYBE would work OR.....

You could swap only the 90 AIR bag to the back the 91 Steering wheel but the air bag module clips in different if memory serves correctly. The Cam connector for the horn is the same. You would have a lot more room for the DERM harness vs. the 90 as well.

So long as you're matching the SIR Coil/clock-spring to a '90 MY air-bag I'm quite certain that the '91 steering wheel will do the '90 and actually a '92 is the same but has the black horn buttons.

If a '90 was in a collision loss and it required a DERM then it required all '91 components, '91 DERM, '91 AIR BAG, the '91 SIR coil/clock-spring and also the '91 steering wheel. If you only wanted to service a steering wheel because of cosmetic issues the same part number was supplied by GM for both and then of course the same for the '92 and notes to change buttons if that were an issue.

I've never seen anyone cut/splice or change the connector at the column base or the top of the coil to match the AIR BAG connector but I don't know why it couldn't be accomplished. There's always been the appropriate pins (gold) for the connectors and there's even cut-splice instructions in later FSM publications. A C4 FSM I'm not sure but I believe so. For liability I believe GM mentions if a pigtail/connector is part of the component you do NOT repair, you replace the component.

The final "SPO replacement" for all '90 to '93 Corvettes was the same part number with notes to replace/swap the horn buttons. They even noted the button part numbers with the steering wheel so that it wasn't overlooked.

I have a 91 spare steering wheel in my garage if you want to use it while your 90 steering wheel is getting done. Its not pristine but is far from the worst 91 steering wheel ive ever seen before either. At least you can test out if the 90 air bag will work with it. It is a decent core

Make sure you have the correct GM removal screws that only go in so far as to not harm the clockpring. Its a real easy job to remove the wheel. I can loan you those screws if the need em -=JEFF=-

So I am not sure it was answered here.. maybe it was and I am not reading it right..

Will the 90 airbag work on a 1991 steering wheel?

The connector on the coil is different. It would require a cut/splice to use the '90 on a '91 or using the later on the earlier. SIR cut/splices weren't considered effective or accepted repairs in earlier SIR systems but later some connectors were made available and there were instructions for cut/splice and the appropriate gold plated terminals were offered.

There's never been published information using one or the other to replace the other except when using all of the components including the DERM, coil and other components including the steering wheel when replacing the '90 original with '91 product.

Either could be used to "fill the void" in the steering wheel though.

Thanks WV,

I think it answered the question..

Basically, I want to remove the 90 steering wheel itself, install a 1991 wheel ( temporary or permanent) while still using all the 90 components (sans the physical wheel)

So it sounds like I can do this.. my concern was will the 90 bag clip/mount or whatever to the 91 wheel
