Cam chain rattle.
Got a question for you all. Yesterday I took the car for a ride and at start up the engine made a rattle sound for about three seconds until the oil pressure built. Im using the Mobil 1 filter is this the problem(drain back?)
Its this normal? Ive never heard it before. I was also wondering I have been using 5w30 mobil 1 syn, is it ok to go to 10w30. My car has 13500 miles. Thanks Ray

Re: Cam chain rattle.
You can try switching to the Bosch 3401 (?) oil filter. As per Marc H's article on the ZR1net the Bosch has better check valve quality's over the Mobil !.
Good Luck

Re: Cam chain rattle.
You have a 94 listed so rattle is not as common in the later years. Having said that a little rattle at startup should not be a big concern especially if it has sat for a few days or more. My 90 will rattle a little on startup if it has sat and that is with different filters. I also use Mobil 1 filters and oil and have not felt the need to change. I have read Marc's write up but will be sticking with my Mobil 1's for a while at least (I have a few on the shelf)
As to the 10w30, I know several people who have switched for one reason or another and they have not reported any problems. The bottom line is that you can change filters or the oil, but what you are using is great as well. |

Re: Cam chain rattle.
It is normal.
'90-'94 Chain Tensioner Kit (Right side) 12550580 This is the kit to "fix" it. It will help but not eliminate it. Ted |
