Rear main seal ? Pulling clutch etc see a few drops ..
See some oil on the bottom of the bellhousing and on the bottom of the pan. Not sure where it's from. Heads and block look clean as does the top and sides of the bellhousing. Couldn't google too much about the rear main seal and wether it's a common source for leaks etc or how easy it is the change? Just wanted to ask since I'll be in there tonight and am hoping to pinpoint where the oil is coming from.

Loose pan bolts are the first thing I would check,Mike.

Definitely will double check them again. They were loose when I did the headers. Maybe I should remove clean and add some loc tite?

Also check rear main seal housing screws behind flywheel.
They also come loose. Pete

Thx Pete I'll definitely check them as well. Is the rear seal a job that requires special tools etc ? From what I google it's not like the lt1 where everyone says change it while you're in there.
Until then .. Stuck on this clutch fork stud bolt.. Don't seem to have this size :/ |

Same deal as LT1, better to do while you have the trans out & flywheel off. No special tools required, simple job.

Re: Rear main seal ? Pulling clutch etc see a few drops ..
Didn't want to make a new thread so Ill add them here. Wasn't a lot of oil but looked like some from the tube going to the valley (had to google what that was lol). The oil pan bolts were fairly tight. The seal bolts were not very tight aound 5 ft-lbs if I had to guess. Not sure what the torque specs are on those ill check the fsm.
here's a few photos Im not sure if this is a weight? but on the flywheel this was the only small hole filled.. COmparison pic New disc |
