Brush with Greatness
I was checking out the current N.Y.Times article on the auction season, and noticed the Red/Red 67' L88, (#2 in the slide show).
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/201...-slides-2.html It took me back to Nov.94' when my son and I flew out to Corvette Mike's in L.A. to purchase and pick up my ZR-1. My white car was parked next to this Red/Red mid-year, a beauty. When they popped the hood I was blown away, a big, bad, original L88! I had seen two of these before, but this one was impressive. Totally restored, with an asking price of $500K. Same car, this month at Barrett Jackson, went for $3,900,000.00. Not too bad as an investment. But too rich for my blood. |

Re: Brush with Greatness
I'm not that great at math, but on that day in 94' my car was worth 1/15th of what the L88 was, and today it's worth 1/200th the price of the 67'.
It's kinda getting like the pay differential between me, and the CEO's of the companies I work for. I don't like the way things are trending. |

Just because some one pays that much for the car; doesn't make it worth that much!!!
The next time that car sales; it might sale for 1/3rd that price!!! |

Sometimes you only have one way to go when you're on top of the mountain.
Stupid money is always stupid though.

Re: Brush with Greatness
We have a local club patron who has a stable of corvettes since he had a corvette shop and worked on them for many years. He has a white 1967 L-88 coupe. He drives it to our yearly shows. Many years ago we had an outing to Moroso Motorsports park and he brought it out to make a few runs. On cheater slicks and a basic tune it ran 11.50 in the quarter. Of course this thing uses race gas etc... It has a history that included drag racing with the first owner. He had a nickname (the flying dutchman) and this was his car. I always get blown away when Dave drives his 1967 L-88 to our shows. I thought it was always worth some money but never what they are bringing now. I would be surprised if I saw Dave drive up in this car again. This is an ORIGINAL 1967 L-88!!

Re: Brush with Greatness
My sort-of brush with greatness? (glad you asked)
I borrowed '94 FSM from local Bowtie dealer a few years ago. It had Gordon K's number inside the back cover.
