The dreaded no start problem
I have a 92 Zr-1 and lately when I go somewhere usually at night and park for an hour or so I get in and nothing, no starter. If you do nothing for 10minutes bingo it will start usually, until lastnight... I checked some wires cleaned terminals etc and had been good for almost 2 weeks and then it did it again. I waited 10 minutes and still nothing. Luckily now after a little education from c4guru website I put in my stashed paperclip and went into diagnostics. The fuel was enabled so not a VATS problem. I went to CCM 1.4 and looked at test 12 the starter relay and noticed it was OFF (with key in ignition) then rocked the car and it was on for a second. I noticed it was then toggling on and off but no start. It was doing all this without my foot on the clutch; which I wonder does that eliminate the clutch switch?
Well at least I knew it was a starter circuit problem and not VATS, so I then successfully jumpstarted the car. Any insight on troubleshooting start circuit problem without blindly throwing parts at it and or ripping the plenum off unless nessary. Thanks greg |

Greg:
Welcome to my world. Read the following thread completely from beginning to end. There's TONS of good information in there, and maybe even a cure for your problem. http://www.zr1netregistry.com/forum/...ead.php?t=1849 Let me know what you find, and what you decide to do about it. I'll be glad to help. TomC '90ZR1 #792

Re: The dreaded no start problem
Sounds like the ultimate fix to get maximum voltage to the starter solenoid. I hate to start chopping into the wiring harness though. I will have to ponder this. I guess I could start by checking all connections leading to the starter solenoid or measuring voltage at the solenoid but it would be good then when testing it.

I too thought long and hard about chopping into my wiring harness. What made it easier for me was that the PO's mechanic had probed the purple wire at some time in the past (obviously the Dreaded No Start had been going on for quite some time) and he had dug a large hole about the size of Vermont in the wire. The copper wires exposed by the alien space probing were green and the wire was stiff for about a half an inch on either side of the mid-Atlantic rift valley. I carefully cut the insulation with a razor knife and peeled the covering back and was saddened to see that the wire was pretty well corroded. Cutting was easy then. Had to. TomC '90ZR1 #792
