Transmission fill / drain plug question
I went to drain my trans fluid today, and noticed someone had used channel locks or something on the fill plug, . it also looks like they might have tried the wrong tool on the inside of the plug. So my questions are what is the correct size of the fill and drain tools? and are the plugs available to buy? I'm sure there has got to be a few different transmissions that use the same plugs. ( ps i didnt remove the plugs , I am waiting to try and use the correct allen socket. thanks

Use a small hammer and tap allen wrench end into the center of the drain plug. If that does not work....you will have to use channel locks or small pipe wrench on outside of plug. Actually.......I would insert the 17 mm Allen by tapping and then place channel locks on outside using both wrenches. The Trans Drain Plug is the same size and is usually scuffed from road rash. You can use a larger box wrench over the end of the 17mm allen end as leverage along with the channel locks on outside of plug. The transmission fill and drain Plug threads are M24 x 1.5 and zfdoc should have them When you install the plugs use a bit of Permatex Form A Gasket Sealant (or similar) and do not tighten plugs too much. See Note D LT5/ZR-1 Fluids REMOVE THE FILL PLUG FIRST

Re: Transmission fill / drain plug question
The plugs are 24 X 1.5 but I believe they're "tapered pipe" similar to our tapered pipe thread. You could do them locally but you give up the 17mm hex of the standaard ZF plug. If you're not concerned with the originality they should be quite readily available. An off the shelf 906 DIN I believe is a 12mm hex.
If your concern was just the "fill" plug you could actually do that with a "conventional hex" A conventional hex is a 909 DIN. |

The drain & fill are the same! If yours are different then one or the other has been replaced with something other than OE. Cliff mentioned the 17mm hex and I mentioned it again. Last edited by WVZR-1; 04-28-2013 at 02:48 AM. |

Re: Transmission fill / drain plug question
Ok Thanks I guess my trans plugs have been changed . My drain is smaller . I did buy a 17 mm allen and it kind of fits the fill plug ( but someone messed it up ) the drain looks like maybe a 14-15 mm
Thanks WV PS I did call ZRDOC last week but couldnt get a hold of anyone. |
