Yes... sort of. I think there is a aluminum I-beam that replaces the spare tire. It spans the gap left when the spare is not in place. The concept with the I-beam is to provide the resistance (in a crash) that the spare tire provides normally. My understanding is that the spare tire is an essential component in rear end crash protection. It's strength/size/mass/whatever is critical to surviving a rear end type crash.

i've heard the theory that the spare tire is part of the rear impact system and I'm not sure that I buy. I don't see the ntsb allowing something that can be easily removed to be part of the crash support system.

for example, if you blow a rear tire, you won't have anything there to absorb the impact of the crash if the theory is to hold true

I have the spare tire delete that you are talking about. Also have a spare one that's new.....not that new would matter.
