Need Help with Rim Selection
I have a 6 piston setup on my Z. The stock rims are in storage as well as some 5 spoke chromes. Currently, I have the 5 spoke chromes on the ZR-1. I have debated powder coating the extra set 5 spokes black.
I am pretty particular with the way the wheels sit in the wheel well. Many big brakes/rims either don't look correct or they change the stance of the car. I went through this years ago with a Wilwood 6 piston setup. With the Baer's the stance is correct. I have seen all the rims over the years and it seems we are very limited, CCW, FISKE, HRE etc. I thought the Shelbys looked decent. Some of the others are too blingy for me. To be honest, I am not even a big fan of the 5 spoke chromes but it was what came on my car so I have left it alone. Many of the 3 piece wheels are too blingy for me as well. The ones that appeal to me the most are DYMAG Gen 1 & Gen 2 with the Nod going to Gen 1 probably without the covers on them - powdercoated in black maybe minus the lug covers and with black lugs. These Fiskes also appeal to me in black. I know the black makes the wheel disappear but I'm not a big fan when the lip is a different color - just personal taste. Naturally, I'd want to drop the ride height and close the gap on the fenders. Any thoughts on the best rims and color would be appreciated. I don't mind spending the $$$ but in the end I want to be happy with it. Best rims for Yellow, I'm thinking black....... Dymag Gen II's? Last edited by xlr8nflorida; 05-27-2011 at 01:38 AM. |

Re: Need Help with Rim Selection
wouldn't it be cheaper to change the entire wheel rather then having the rim cut off and a new one welded onto the rest of the wheel? Sorry I had to give ya a hard time. ok moving on, I think the FM5 and the FM10's are the best looking wheels on our car

I absolutely love the Dymag GenII's. Lgaff's car looks so good as well as Daniel_Mc's white Dieline car. These wheels aren't for everyone but they sure are unique.
The black ones above are mine and here is a pic of Daniel's Dileine car.

Agreed, I think they would look good on my car in black - go good with centerline rub strip. Just need to find a good deal on them and in 11s. |

Re: Need Help with Rim Selection
Boy, do I feel for you and understand what you are going through. Rims or wheels are the most subjective thing to have to deal with on cars. It is the single most important mod that really changes the personality of a car and especially one of your color that is rare. As you stated, the 90 MY with the black trim throws a curve ball in there and I see your taste with the black wheels as I like, but you like it all black. I won't even try to give an opinion because rims are so subjective, but I just thought I would share some thoughts I went through because I also wanted to accent the black trim/molding we have on our first year ZR-1s.
If you have not already done so, I tried to look for similar color combos to see how the many styles look and what caught my eye and taste. Here is a sample: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&b...aqi=g1&aql=&oq= I searched for images of yellow C4 Corvettes but as you can see other generations popped up too. I understand it makes a difference between the 90 MY and the later model solid yellow and I guess the best might be to find 84-90 MY yellow with AM rims/wheels for the best comparison. Anyway, it sounds like you have your mind somewhat made up and that is good. Another thing is money does not seem like an object to you as it was in my case and having bought my ZR-1 for $15,000 in 2003, I could not get myself to spend more that $3K on a tire/wheel package and so opted with CCWs. PC'd the centers black, then I went further to PC the centers of my stock wheels black too. So yeah, I'm a black wheel guy and my black Honda Ridgeline was dubbed with black center wheels too. If money was no object for me I wanted to have HRE build me something as I had their wheels about 20 plus years ago and loved them. When they got old I sent them back and had them rebuild them and it was reasonable and looked like new after they aged. When one got damaged in a snow storm the outer rim was replaced and the wheels was like new; one of the benefits of the 3 piece wheels. I think you made a nice choice and it will look pretty sinister looking. Best wishes in your quest. Craig

Re: Need Help with Rim Selection
Thanks Craig, I have not purchased anything yet.
I did it backwards, I paid about 3,500 for my front brakes now I don't feel like paying 3,000 for rims lol. I know someone who has a bunch of dymags and I would probably get a fair deal. |

Re: Need Help with Rim Selection
I have a set of Gen 1's with 11" wide rears that are straight, crack-free ready to be refinished. pm or email me if interested. The best wheel for the '90 ZR-1 IMO, very few out there.

Re: Need Help with Rim Selection
That's great! If you end up keeping them, I'd like to be next in line for them. I hope Xlr8 buys them for his car though!!!!!!! They would look great!!

Re: Need Help with Rim Selection
I parted with my 17x11/17x9.5 set. I knew I would regret it. LOL Since I sold them, I got a 90 ZR1. Now I wish I had them. My GenII's will go on a 92 ZR1 I am rebuilding.
