In the FSM the blow up picture shows a gear within a gear type. Isn't that a gerotor type pump vs the old fashioned meshed gear type in the old sbc motors?

Thanks for the info where to find it. I didn't see it in the supplement and didn't think to look in the big book. I think your right, looks like a gerotor.

That's some flowand thanks for the picture, that must be part of the reason these lt5's are hard to break.

You're welcome. I think you are right about our oil pumps and not sure there has ever been a failure on one of these.

Craig,

How was rebuilding the pump? Was it something hard to do? I am thinking of doing the same thing to mine.

Shayne,

Here is a post I did on a blog about the rebuild if it will help you.

The page before towards the botton explains the carbon seal replacement and that is vital; thanks to Jerry for all his technical advice on this and recommending the new seal:

To be honest, I think I was being very anal when rebuilding mine and I can't even imagine how these could fail other than the carbon seal side? I am sure I would have been fine, but since I was doing a rebuild it seem the right thing to do and hardly worn inside from visual inspection. Just old school and when rebuilding the SBC or BBC I used to always put in a new oil pump. Since I had a new OEM late model pump I just swapped the guts out to be able to sleep at night and hopefully with all the redline WOT the LT5 will stay together.

Best wishes.

Craig

You're welcome and thanks for your thoughts. I still can't believe I rebuilt the LT5 myself, but it was a great learning experience and good feeling.
