Tom,
I am trying to get my 90 Z to pass CA smog, are you running stock manifolds and cats?

Yup.

Flowmaster cat back exhaust system and Haibec prom installed after prior smog.
Has fresh plugs, recent oil change, and fairly new injectors (installed 3 years ago but only 1000 miles or so on them) and a tank full of Chevron's best.
Just prior to smog I drove the car about 18-20 miles at freeway speeds or better in 3rd and 4 gear, getting her nice and hot.

Congratz! Now try not to have too much fun and post some pics (or a video) of you driving on a twisty mountain road. That way those of us that are snow bound can live vicariously - at least until March or April!

You will never get it to pass without the Stock cats in (AZ or CA). I have tried the HiFlow Random Techs and Magna Flos with Jeal headers and no dice. Just a sniffer test fine but once it gets worked out on the treadmill your toast.

My gut feeling is that a good running stock LT5 should have no problems passing the California Smog Nazis.
Even a good running reasonably modified LT5 shouldn't have too many problems passing.
Again, the operative words are "Good Running".
A bored and stroked 427 running 703hp, hmmm.... probably not.
(congrats, it's a Monster!!!).
Even cars with headers and aftermarket cats, if they're the right cats and the LT5 is running right, it really shouldn't be that much of a problem.

All bets are off if it's got leaky injectors, bad coils, old spark plugs, or big vacuum leaks in the top end.

Mine would not pass. New Aftermarket hiflow cats, New coils, new injectors, new plugs, new wires, new Secondary tubing and actuators, plenum gaskets etc. It was running great and I ran the snot out of it to make sure it was warmed up. It was my belief these new stainless hi flow cats disipate the heat too fast and the emissions dont burn correctly. Im am sure if you placed a generic regular syle replacement cat under there it probablly would pass. I am only relating my issues in AZ with these Hi flow stainless cats. It will never pass the treadmill roller test undriving load.
