Issues w swapping Steering Column?
Getting ready to do a motor transplant on my 92 BR/ZR. While the engine bay has the room, I'm considering swapping steering columns. The one on the BR is loose in the vertical axis. Aside from needing to swap ignition tumblers, what other components will require swap or change to make this work? Is it just a matter of matching resistors in the key? I will be keeping the original CCM with the BR. Also looking to swap air bag from BR column to Aqua car column.

Re: Issues w swapping Steering Column?
instead of pulling both columns apart.. take BOTH keys to the locksmith have him cut the Aqua Key with the BR resistance, Although I would check both first, it is possible that they could both have the same resistance currently

Re: Issues w swapping Steering Column?
The steering wheel in my car is loose too, but the local Chevy dealer said it'd be $300 in labor and no parts to tighten it up.
I'd try to fix it yourself before swapping steering columns. |

Sloppy C4 Steering Column, seems to be a fairly common problem.

Re: Issues w swapping Steering Column?
Tom,
Thx for the link. Very comprehensive and interesting. It looks like there are several steps that could also lead to swapping the columns instead. The other choice is to remove the column and do the rebuild on a bench. I've checked with my local Chevy dealer and they will cut a key for my old column BUT with the resistor value of the new car. |

Re: Issues w swapping Steering Column?
I have found there are two "loose wheel" issues. The first is the well known issue/fix above, mine suffers from a "down/left 1/4-inch" most easily seen when getting in and out of the car.
Had a friend do the "usual fix" only to find it did not cure my issue. He's done 100s of them and can do it blindfolded. Bought another 91 column "with good tilt" only to find the same issue. Friend has it to try and get at the root cause on the bench. Before finding the 91 "replacement" I found an odd year/year interchange range but forgot what it was since I had a correct year "solution". Anyone know the interchangable years? ON EDIT - per my salvage buddy's interchange guide, 91-93 manual trans will swap, there is a difference for auto trans, guessing it has to do with shifter lock. Thanks, - Jeff
