A big thanks to Tom today.

I had a problem with my Secondary Vacuum Pump.

Tom spent alot of time today helping me to diagnose the problem and get it fixed. Also in regards to my oil change.

Brothers of the Beast, it rocks - you won't see that in the C5 world

Give us a clue on the secondary vacuum pump problem and the fix so we can learn from your experience

And what happened in regards to oil change

I drive my other Corvettes 99% of the time so I'm not as familiar with the LT-5 specific stuff as quite frankly my ZR-1 has just plain worked over the last 10 years except for an alternator and oil sensor.

I did an oil change and more then likely I bumped the Secondary Vacuum pump line that goes to the pump in the front by the overflow tank. After my oil change, I turned the key and it sounded like all hell let loose - sounded awful. Tom pinpointed it right away and told me to disconnect the pump and sure enough the noise went away. So I was thinking new pump time as Tom said his bit it too but he was able to fix his. Anyway the conversation got to the routing of the line (which mine goes under the reserve tank) which I think is wrong. Maybe someone can confirm, it should probably go along left side of tank and not under it? Anyway, further up near the plenum, it hooks into the line from the plenum.

Well, it looked connected and the two lines were in one another but they were not tight and had to be shoved together. As soon as I did that, everything was back to normal.

I used the MityVak this time and it was just first time user mistakes, primarily as following as I see it:

1.) Not knowing exactly how much oil was in the car to begin with.
We know it should be 9 quart refill if everything comes out, however I'm not sure my oil was full before I started - that was key mistake.

2) Using 5 quart jugs confused the matter even worse.

3) I had one bad filter that I poured oil in before I realized it was a "Scratch and Dent Special" Hence the Dent part and then I had to fill 2nd filter.

4) Regardless, I believe I got out 6 3/4 quarts of oil out but I know I put in about 8.5 quarts (including filling oil filter) so now I'm concerned I might have to much oil in there. As you know the dipstick is not the most accurate (immediately speaking) and I thought I had more in the mityvak then I actually had. I know you can overfill by 1 quart but you probably don't want to overfill 2 quarts)

I really should have checked the oil level prior to starting the process and also pulled the oil pan nut to see if I got it pretty dry. On my LT1 car, it got the pan pretty damn dry, maybe a few oz if that.

Oh well, I'll probably do a traditional change in the spring but this mityvak is pretty damn good. I'm going to start using it in the "mix" especially on my drivers. On my LT-1 car I was done in no time.

It was definitely the oil change from hell.

Any advice as to best method to move further would be appreciated. The fact that the LT-5 takes forever to drain down and the fact that the dipstick tube is a PIA always makes me wonder if I'm getting the most accurate reading etc. On my other Corvettes, its pretty straight forward.

5) Bottom line is this: I am now at the A in ADD on the dipstick and its been about 12 hours so I guess I check it in morning and if its at the same point then:

A) Start it, shut it down and recheck and top off
B) Add oil and run and recheck?

I hope its not overfilled because I tried sucking some back out but nothing is coming out, just air.

Perhaps Mityvak only works if the oil is hot.

On a side note, my rear has Mobil 1 and GM additive and my radiator has fresh green stuff compliments of Napa.

Jim, no thanks needed as it is a pleasure to help out another BOB. Truth be told folks, it took me a while to get to the vacuum pump as the source of the noise. Mine is so quiet since I refurbished it, and my vacuum system under the plenum is tight that I hardly hear my pump run any more. I flat missed it till I ran down all the electrically powered items that come on at KOEO.....the pump was the last thing that I stumbled upon and then the loose line at the connection was pure luck that Jim saw it!

Oh, no that line is supposed to be routed along the frame rail, not under the overflow tank. There are a few "eyes" that also hold the overflow line along the rail and it goes thru them and follows the hard lines up to just before the O/Filter. At that point it jumps across to the water outlet from the I/H and goes over that water hose and to the rear of the alternator. My connection point is just to the inside of that I/H hose.

Oh, no worries about the S/O as the wife left a while ago.....I bought the ZR-1 to make me feel less guilty.

Added a quart between yesterday and today - 1/2 quart a day.

I'm in good shape now.
