Locktite cleanout??
The post below reminded me of a question I have regarding running a tap thru aluminum parts - as part of a general cleanup or to remove old Locktite (or the like) from the threads before chasing an assembly bolt back down the hole. On a cast iron head, I wouldn't give it a second thought. But on aluminum stuff, I Do we just run a standard threading tap down bolt holes to clean up aluminum, or is there a special thread chaser that we should be using - especially on aluminum??
TIA P.

Re: Locktite cleanout??
Never thought about this Paul. Good Q. I'm with you being very wary to use a tap on aluminum threads.....unless it was from a very well made tap & die set. As an aside, I never did use any Blue Loctite ( thought about it but the FSM didn't call for it ) when I reassembled my plenum & I/H's. I have had to subsequently go back under there twice and have found that after I T/Q'ed the bolts that they held the T/Q between pulls. Tom

Re: Locktite cleanout??
Paul,
They make thread cleaning taps, doesnt remove any metal. They just clean the treads, I think Sears sells them.. |

Re: Locktite cleanout??
Snap-On makes as well. I've been doing this long enough that I have an old Tap & Die set that is ¾ worn out, still works great for what your talking about here.
