Thermostat
Just a positive note on Ron Wood thermostats. Picey? yes and worth every penny. Makes the stock Tstat look like something from a 99cents store.
Installed a New Radiator and the 165 stat. When adding fresh coolant, i noticed the proper flow in the top tank right at 165 degrees at the info center. Cool.

Re: Thermostat
Well on my car the fans were programed to go on at 190. With the stock stat that means they ran all the time. 190 min. temp about 198 cruise temp fans on always before.
After new radiator and 165 stat. 167 minimum 170 cruise fans have yet to come on. 220$= well worth it.

Re: Thermostat
Tom:
Randy Woods says on his web site Heavy duty 165 deg F thermostat is designed to target an optimal engine operating temperature of approximately 180 deg F. You had to bring this up I just sent an e-mail to Marc to see if running a 165 deg thermostat would effect chip modifications Marc says (WOW...his responses are FAST) "The fan control points need to be changed to match your thermostat. The 165 deg thermostat is 15 degrees lower than the OE thermostat. I will set the fan control points 15 degrees lower" I assume from this that just running a 165 deg thermostat without changing your fan control points....... or for that matter your radiator..... will not have nearly as great effect on emissions as doing all three. But then again, I will have two modified chips and it only takes a minute to change fan control points switching to my second chip. You will find all sorts of comments related to cold and hot thermostats but in the end, you may be correct on emissions and thermostats. Having said that it could go either way. Some say the 02 sensors take over early in the game controlling air fuel mixture (below 160 degs). But then again coupled with my Ron Davis radiator and Marc modified chip which controls air fuel mixture as well as fan operation, I guess lowering emissions was not my goal. And then there are those SW headers and SW 3 inch exhaust with no CATS (keeping my CATS HOT was obviously not an issue) If you are still concerned Tom, do your emissions check on a HOT summer NY day with heater off (fans disconnected). Do not check your emissions when there is snow on the ground with heater on. I am sure just that suggestion will have a greater effect on emissions than a thermostat Last edited by Dynomite; 03-20-2010 at 11:16 PM. |

Re: Thermostat
Kb, sorry for the hi-jack.
Cliff, Yea I hear you. The book I'm reading to try to educate myself on these 'puter controlled cars leads me to believe that high coolant temps = lower emissions....or at least that's what I think I'm getting from my reading. If my thoughts are on the right track then I think that two PROM's maybe the answer to my state's emission testing. A stock one for testing and a rewritten one to match any mods that I may do. My car has to go another five yrs before it becomes exempt from emissions testing in NYS....that is if they don't change the law by the time my car gets to age 25! It's just that I'm trying to develop a plan so I can do some simple mods and still pass without having to do much more than change a PROM. I do believe that I may be able to have my cake ( some what ) and keep the Commissar happy also!

Re: Thermostat
Tom,
Westchester CO. requires an emissions test on a 1990?? Bring it up by me, I have yet for them to do an actual tailpipe test. The just plug into the ALDL and look for any stray codes. We can talk more at BG. John |

Re: Thermostat
Yes John Westchester & Nassau requires that you go on the "roller test loop" as part of the emissions testing. I think they sniff at idle and then put the car thru a simulated driving city-highway loop with the sniffer and the scanner connected to the ALDL while the car is on the roller rack. They scan the bar code on the registration sticker to verify ownership address and vehicle type and then it's off to the test loop.
I gotta get me property up by you so I can skate by on them.....I wish. Actually I think now Putnam & Rockland & maybe even Dutches & Orange Cos. are "in" the zone for the roller test. I guess I'm an "enemy of the State" because I own an antique hi-performance vehicle.

Tom,
Why don't you come up state and set up a PO Box for an address. I would think that should work????? John |
