Question - has anybody spliced into the backup wiring at the backup light to a backup camera?

I did. Tapped into reverse light power and connected to Pioneer AVIC Z140BT.

Hmmm... if I remember correct, back camera had power lead, ground and a coax to head unit. I think, first I removed rear shelf plastic trim. Removed left back up light, mounted camera above license plate and ran power lead to power goin to back up light. Ground wire for the camera was fished up and grounded using 10 mm nut I found under the shelf trim. Coax was fished up to shelf area and pulled under the storage area carpet and brought in under the center console and connected to the head unit.
Any back up camera you purchase will have schematic wiring diagram.

Just to confirm, you're reference to the "shelf trim" is on the inside of the hatch area? Or did I misunderstand?

Yes. Inside the hatch where latch is.

I did it, on both my present ZR-1 and previous C5. If you want to wire up a WIRELESS backup camera as you said, you don't have to take apart anything except to remove the license plate holder to access the backup light wiring. I used the driver's side wiring. Just use some piggyback quick wire taps to hook up the 12V to supply the camera and transmitter. There's plenty of room back in there to work and for the wires and transmitter to sit.
BTW, the wireless units work as well as the direct wire ones do and are a whole lot easier and less traumatic to install. Just hide the receiver unit beneath either the driver or passenger side hush panel, your choice.

Many thanks for the info. The Garmin unit has a transmitter, that's separate from the camera and would have to fit behind the license plate holder.

Was it a problem to get to the backup light wiring to clip on the quick wire taps?
