Question RE: Replacing coolant...

I've drained 100% of the coolant to replace my water pump, and I seem to remember there was a procedure to eliminate air pockets in the engine (I seem to remember something about an air bleed valve(?) or something??). I wish had "cut and pasted" the article to my file at the time, but alas...

So, any "1,2,3..." help would be appreciated.

TIA

you can pull the rubber line that connects to the t body . just fill her up slow till you just get a dribble .then connect it back up and fill the over flow tank . start her and let her warm up all the way . shut her off and when she cools she will suck up the rest and you are good to go. might be different from some but its worked for me for 5 yrs . and easy for an old guy to remember

Yes. That seemed to work somewhat. I stood over the reservoir w/ a bottle of coolant and it "drank" about 3/4 gallon after it initially topped off. Many thanks for your help.

Paul,
I am about to replace my radiator and thermostat. I have worried over what coolant to use as everything I have found locally does not have any silicates in the formula. Based on what I have read around here it is necessary due to the head gaskets. So what product did you use? Thanks.

Actually, I re-used the antifreeze except for about 3 quarts that "escaped" in the process. I used the "green" ethylene glycol mix (the old stuff) from Federated. I didn't see any references to silicates in the formula, but it that doesn't mean it isn't in there as well. (It should be ethylene glycol solution and meet the GM spec. "1825-M", I'm told)

It was an article by Marc Haibeck in the HOTB newsletter #11, July '07. I don't want to post the contents as it is not my material to do that with. But if you are a registry member, just grab that newsletter off the site.

You can still buy silicated coolant from GM. Be prepared to pay through the nose now. The $18 per gallon that seemed so absurd before now seems like a dream. The last gallon I bought cost $30 from the local GM parts counter!

So does that mean I need to buy the silicated formula from the General or is any formula that meets the "1825-M" spec good to go? Just call me paranoid but I want to get it right and not create any problems. Thanks.
