Z looks great!

Nice shot in front of the NASA T-38 Talon.

One of my own shots as an instructor in the '80s... Very fun, nimble machine. ... just like the Z.

Epic in flight picture! I just watched a Youtube video with the pilots of the SR71 program. Someone asked from the audience if they ever did any hot dogging in the Black Bird.......His answer was no NEVER, if we wanted to get into a sports car and have fun, we would hop in our T-38s

Thanks rush91. Nice story about the SR71 pilots. The T-38 was definitely a 'sports car.' Streamlined, fast, great climb rate, and could roll at 720 degrees per second. Could get places quick if flying cross country at .9 mach, or better. (I imagine, also, there might be a few other ZR-1 drivers here who flew it.)

Yet, all these fun things were easy to forget when you were flying with student pilots - many times 3 times a day, in hot/windy weather - who were trying to hurt the airplane, themselves, or you! (Well, they weren't really trying to hurt anything, just doing their best during the learning process). One always had to be on guard as an instructor... yet the reward at the end was to enjoy seeing solid progress culminating in their graduation day with shiny new Air Force silver wings.

This photo was in an instructor only 4-ship formation, with special authorization to bring a camera. It did bring back some good memories, and a few humorous ones.

A quick one: One of our instructors flew a professional football player on a T-38 sortie, and that evening he spoke to our flying squadron at a formal dinner. He told how he thoroughly enjoyed the exhilarating flight. ...But apparently, the instructor also pulled a few of our old tricks on him. In one, he told how his pilot said he'd dropped his pen on the floor and it rolled back into his [rear] cockpit, would he please retrieve it for him? As the football player bent down to look, his torso and head were immediately pinned in the bent over position as the pilot pulled the airplane into 5-6 G's! Gotcha!

All the best...
