Hey Guys,
I am changing oil for the first time since owning my car and have a quick question. When I removed the drain plug it appeared that there was teflon tape on it. There doesn't seem to be any info in the service manual on this particular item so I am wondering if any of you have done this before. Any leakage problems not using the teflon tape? Thanks |

Mine didn't have teflon tape, just a sealing washer (metal on the outside, rubber on the inside) on the bolt.

I looked on the CSK, autozone and Napa sites and it looks like they only have the fiber seal available. I'll call the dealer tomorrow. Might have to go with the fiber and teflon tape this time.
Thanks |

actually, the teflon tape routine is done by a lot of garages, for added sealing...i do it on a lot of bikes, specially the ones that seem to have some thread wear, which is not uncommon with aluminum oilpans

As far as I know if it's the white teflon tape it should never be used anywhere near petroleum products (such as oil) as it breaks down and can form small gritty particles that can cause damage or block up essential small holes.
I had that happen several years ago on a drag car I worked on - the injectors got blocked with the stuff.

The GM seal had to be ordered so I went to Autozone and just got the fiber one they have for the Z. No other problems. Thanks a lot for all the replies guys.
But, some great news for everyone on oil filters, they stock the Bosch 3401 that is recommended by Marc Haibeck. I got two at only $5.99 each, what a bargain. CSK wanted $7.99 and you gotta order them. |
