Re: Interesting read about engine basics/designs
Thanks Bob that was indeed interesting. I guess saftey is why the stock fuel map is rich. I guess when tuners take fuel out of the mapping they are relying on false knock signals being there as they monitor EGT and maybe that "wide band O2" thing to tell them there is too much fuel and the knock sensor programing has too low a threshold for knock events?
Man the creativity that tuners use is amazing.

Re: Interesting read about engine basics/designs
Glad you enjoyed it. I thought it was very interesting. Obviously just reading an article doesn't make me close to an expert, but it does make the LT5 seem more impressive.
I'd guess it must have a reasonably fast burn chamber, as it has both high compression, and low max timing advance. I believe the factory max is like 23 degrees BTDC. And I believe the car can be run on 87 octane (according to the owners manual), though I'd imagine it is not optimized for that. Pretty cool stuff. Though I also own an Aurora with the 2nd generation of Northstar/Premium V8 architecture, so I found the specific references to the changes made to be interesting.
